Kazi Hoque

Noor served in the military during World War II who served as a wireless operator for the Special Operations Executive, (SOE). The purpose of the SOE was to conduct espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance against Nazi Germany and the countries under its control.

In June 1943 she was flown to France to become the radio operator for the 'Prosper' resistance network in Paris, with the codename 'Madeleine'. Many members of her unit were arrested but she bravely chose to remain in Paris to continue their operations. She spent the summer of 1943 moving from place to place across France sending back messages to London all while trying to avoid capture. She was eventually betrayed and arrested by the Gestapo and executed at Dachau concentration camp. After her death she was awarded the George Cross.

The George Cross is the highest British award for non-operational gallantry or gallantry not in the presence of an enemy. In the British honours system, the GC, since its introduction in 1940, has been equal in stature to the Victoria Cross, the highest military award for valour.

Noor was an astonishing woman whose brave contribution helped tremendously in gaining more information about the Nazis in France and helped Britain greatly in winning the war.
