This is a Grade I listed building whose interior is built in an exuberant Orientalist style, a mix of Moorish, Classical, Egyptian, Romanesque and Gothic elements, and was commissioned by the Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation in 1872-4 with a budget of £15,000. It was designed by two Scottish Presbyterian architects, W. and G. Audsley, who had no prior experience of building a synagogue. It is cited by the architectural historian Miles Danby as a classic example of the "Moorish Style" in Victorian England. It is generally regarded as one of the finest "cathedral synagogues" in Europe, and among the reasons for its Grade I listing for Historic England is the building's "eclectic Oriental design" that shows the congregation's historic links to the Middle East.

Tours for a modest charged can be booked online or by calling the synagogue. All proceeds go to the upkeep of the building.
