Shortly after stepping down as Mayor of Stalybridge, Robert, Emma, and some of his grown up children moved to the neighbouring town of Ashton-under-Lyne, although the grocers shop in Stalybridge was still kept. Robert became publican of the "New Inn" for some 18 years and it was from here that he began to correspond with the Sultan himself and with Abdullah Quilliam - via letters to The Crescent, the newspaper published by the Liverpool Muslim Institute. Robert sold the pub in 1898, moving to Rusholme, and shortly afterwards converting to Islam in April that year. His biographer Christina Longden says it is unknown whether he was a teetotaler before he converted but it might be that the sale of the pub was part of Robert's preparation for conversion itself.

The "New Inn" remains open and still serves as a traditional workingman's pub as it was in Robert's time. Its address is 157 Mossley Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, OL6 6LX.
