Abd el-Ouahed ben Messaoud
Abd el-Ouahed ben Messaoud was the ambassador to the court of Queen Elizabeth I and was responsible for establishing trade relations between England and Morocco. Abd el-Ouahed initially travelled to England in order to create a Muslim Protestant alliance against Catholic Spain, however after rejection from the Tudor Queen, Queen Elizabeth agreed to form a commercial relationship exchanging English cloth, saltpeter (for gunpowder), and metal for Morocco's gold and sugar.
It is also believed that it was Abdel-Ouahed ben Messaoud who inspired Shakespeare's Othello, a Moorish military commander.
