Bahadur Sher
Bahadur Sher was born in Northern Pakistan in 1930 and arrived in the UK in 1961 with the aspiration to build a better quality of life for himself and his family, much like the stories of other South Asian immigrants who migrate to the UK.
Sher was very much a character that could be described as the epitome of what an inspirational person should be, constantly working to create this ideal life that he had envisioned within his mind regardless of the racial discrimination that he had faced. An example of this was the increasingly difficult working conditions that Sher and his fellow workmates were forced to endure, being asked to take on more responsibilities like looking after 2 or three machines at one time. This case ended up going to court, however, due to the problem of language barriers and certainly racial discrimination, they had lost the case.
During the 50s and 60s, racism was very much alive and many South Asian men that had migrated to the UK at this time were subject to horrific acts of discrimination. Sher's life serves as a lesson to us all not to give up in the face of any sort of prejudice or discrimination that we may face.
