Abdullah Yusuf Ali
Abdullah Yusuf Ali, born on April 14, 1872, in Bombay, British India (present-day Mumbai, India), was a renowned Islamic scholar, translator, and commentator. He is best known for his authoritative English translation of the Quran, which has become one of the most widely read and respected translations in the English-speaking world.
Yusuf Ali was born into a well-educated and religiously inclined family. He received a comprehensive education in Arabic, Urdu, Persian, and English. He excelled in his studies and pursued a career in law, becoming a successful lawyer in Bombay.
However, his deep interest in Islamic studies and his passion for promoting a better understanding of Islam led him to dedicate his life to scholarship and writing. Yusuf Ali delved into the study of the Arabic language, Quranic exegesis, and Islamic jurisprudence.
His most significant work is his translation and commentary of the Quran, titled "The Holy Qur'an: Text, Translation, and Commentary." First published in 1934, Yusuf Ali's translation aimed to make the teachings of the Quran accessible to English-speaking audiences while preserving the beauty and integrity of the original Arabic text. He supplemented the translation with extensive footnotes, providing explanations, historical context, and cross-references to other verses of the Quran and related Islamic literature.
Ali knew Arabic and the Qur’an from an early age, and thanks to a Free Church of Scotland education, he also knew Latin and Greek and maintained an interest in Classics for the rest of his days. His translation is highly regarded for its literary quality, accuracy, and depth of understanding. It remains one of the most widely used translations, cherished by Muslims and scholars alike.
In addition to his Quranic translation, Yusuf Ali wrote numerous books on Islamic topics, including "The Meaning of the Holy Qur'an," "The Religion of Islam," and "Muhammad: The Prophet of Islam." He also contributed articles to various publications, advocating for interfaith dialogue, peace, and understanding between different religious communities.
Yusuf Ali's works reflect a profound knowledge of Islamic theology, history, and spirituality. He promoted a balanced and moderate understanding of Islam, emphasizing its universal and inclusive principles. His writings often highlighted the ethical teachings of Islam, emphasizing social justice, compassion, and the importance of personal morality.
His time in London included being involved in securing the land for the Regent’s Park Mosque, along with the Indian High Commissioner Sir Firoze Khan Noor (later Prime Minister of Pakistan) and Sir Hasan Suhrawardi (Muslim Member of the India Office). Ali also drew up the Mosque’s 1948 constitution.
Abdullah Yusuf Ali passed away on December 10, 1953, in London, United Kingdom. His contributions to Islamic scholarship, particularly his English translation of the Quran, continue to have a significant impact on Muslims and non-Muslims alike, fostering a greater understanding of the Quran's message and promoting interfaith dialogue.
