18 July 1866
Victoria Market Hall and Clocktower (aka "The Civic Centre")
Robert Stanley led the project to build the Victoria Market Hall, just three years after he had been elected as a town councillor in Stalybridge. Unlike the other councillors – all from wealthy local families - Robert's experience in setting up a small business, his knowledge of running a shop, along with his understanding of Stalybridge’s customer base – would have been both unique and invaluable for the building of an appropriate covered market for the town. The Victoria Market was opened on 18 July 1866, eight years before Robert was elected Mayor. The current building is used by several local officials, including the office of the local MP. The building is listed but is in dire need of funding in order to renovate the roof.
