Francis Levett
This portrait depicts Francis Levett a "Turkey Merchant", (Member of the Levant Company) of the city of London. In partnership with his brother Sir Richard Levett, Lord Mayor Of London, Levett built a trading empire, importing and distributing tobacco and other commodities, mainly from the Levant. In the Portrait by Jean Etienne Liotard, Levett is shown to be wearing traditional Turkish Clothes, demonstrating England's fascination with the attire and customs of the Muslim Orient.
