The Didicot Ordinance Depot at the Vauxhall Barracks, established during the First World War, was a major site of Pakistani employment until its closure on 1 January 1964. After the 1965 Race Relations Act, many of these employees moved to British Leylands, where there had been a colour bar; British Leylands paid a much higher wage to its semi-skilled laborers. This led to a shift in the demographic distribution of the city, as more Muslim South Asians moved to Cowley to work for British Leyland.
