JACARI
An anti-racist organisation founded by University of Oxford students in 1956. Its purpose was "To arouse among members of the University an interest in the problems of race relations in the Commonwealth by spreading reliable information . . . and (2) To find constructive ways of expressing a dislike of racial discrimination." For example, in 1966, they began a programme of teaching English to Pakistani children. In addition, between 1965-69, they organised a survey amongst Pakistani, Bangladeshi and West Indian residents on discriminatory housing, documenting cases of inequality to send to the Home Office. By 1987, JACARI became non-political and focused its attention on educating migrants.
