EMBS Community College

EMBS was founded in 1988 as a self-help business service for racialised minority groups in Oxford. One of its founders is Mohammad Afzal, a British-Pakistani business owner who was also chairman of Central Oxford Mosque. Over time, EMBS has evolved into an adult education centre and sixth form, serving groups including refugees, asylum seekers and those who speak English as a second language. The history of the college, as a place where Oxford's most marginalised groups could acquire an education and training, transforms existing ideas about the history of education in the city.
